The fact of deliberate practice is the only determiner when it comes to being a successful drummer.  My lessons are centred around core rudimentary drills, learning graded songs, pushing the limits of my students, and working together with parents and their children to build consitent practice.  Aspiring drummers will be happy to know that if anyone has the will to learn, to come to lessons, to stick to their practice schedule, then success is just a matter of time.  Call me on 07894341430 and I will be happy to talk about drum lessons in Harrow UK.

The double rudiments have endless and tasteful ways of playing and doing permutations and variations around the hats, toms and bass drum.  The same can be said for the paradiddle rudiments, but with the double stoke rudiments, you have access to variety, dynamics; all due to the fact that double stroke is easily broken down into two strokes – say on snare and two on bass.  If done fast, or slow, it brings about an effect that sounds bigger than the sum of its parts.  Have a look at this video.  From Kasem, West London Drum Tutor, drum tuition in Harrow, London.

The way I have been practicing mirrors exactly how I teach drums: metronome rudiment on snare and around the drum kit, reading exam pages or other drum books, and playing songs.  I use different grips, dynamics and a range of different songs to lock into grooves and experiment with fills and solos.  The minimum I practice a day is one hour, and after purchasing the new Trinity Guildhall and Rockschool grades 7 and 8, I have more reading to do and some fine tuned drum kit playing.  From Kasem, West London Drum Tutor, drum classes in Harrow, London.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

I have recently purchased a DW 7000 Double bass pedal and now I have started to practice using the rudiments, playing triplets, semi quavers and demi-semi quavers with an 8ths hat feel.  Lots to do but it is high time I learned to use a double bass drum pedal with panache and exuberance.  From Kasem, West London Drum Tutor, drum lessons in Harrow, London.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

I practice with my band, and do three intensives a week that include reading charts, rudiments with a metronome and improvisation and playing to music.  My regime is satisfying and I have been doing double stroke rudiments with bass, snare and toms and added them to my playing.  Great to see technical commitment turn into something creative and fluid.  From Kasem, West London Drum Tutor, drum teacher in Harrow, London.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

Learning drums is part of an overall musical education.  It is practical and theoretical and both aspects complement the other in the sense that you do not learn anything that is not backed by a simultaneous practical and theoretical duality.  Teaching drums also teaches me and I now have a deeper understanding of music, styles, theory, grade exams and the value of reading and playing by ear.  As an open handed drummer, my students can play both open handed and cross stick technique.  This has only happened recently.  From Kasem, West London Drum tutor, Drum Lessons in Harrow, London www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

My latest student has a plan to gain the skills to get into university to study music.  He is quite an excellent drummer with great chops and moves around the drum kit with energy.  We are preparing to polish up his reading to a grade 6 level and it is refreshing to have a student that is powerfully self directed to reach a goal.  As a drummer and teacher I feel my knowledge is used to a great extent and happy that my fellow drummer and musician is ‘getting there’.  From Kasem, West London Drum Tutor, drum lessons in Harrow, London.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

Tuesday March 11, 2014

I have started to visualise a drum kit where I have brought the idea of extreme tuning to a new level.  I think to have an 8 inch tom one, a 14 inch tom two and a piccolo bass drum as a floor tom.  I have to get a nice bass drum from somewhere, build and experiment with this set up.  I always loved extreme tuning and I think to have a grander variety of sounds with more highs and bass notes has to be the best drum kit ever.  I do not really like giant drum kits with too many things to hit, but that is a matter of personal choice not to mention an army of helpers and a van to get around…  From Kasem, West London Drum Tutor, drum teaching in Harrow, London  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

Monday March 10, 2014

A well tuned drum kit is a beautiful thing.  I often play kits that are old and battered, get out my tuning key and with an accumulated knowledge growing since 1990, I transform these drums into something musical. The most difficult drum to tune is the floor tom.  It is mean and stubborn, but when you find its voice and make it sing – that is a wonder to behold.  The bass drum is probably the most rewarding and responsive drum to tune and the snare is also very kind.  From West London Drum Tutor, drum lessons in Harrow, London.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

Cymbal Felts

Cymbal felts are great when you have them and infuriating when you don’t.  I have turned up to gigs and found no cymbal felts.  The pain this caused me when I thought of how my cymbals were going to be mutilated by the raw unsoftened cymbal stand.  I looked and found a cheap solution with a great twelve pack of plastic funnels and felts to protect cymbals.  Cymbal felts tend to go missing and now I have a seeming endless supply of them…  From Kasem, West London Drum Tutor, Harrow Drum teacher in London, UK

The Amen Break beat that was originally recorded in 1969 in a B side called Amen, Brother.  The break is about 6 seconds long and was sampled, sped up, and there are a variety of permutations that accelerated to a feverish pitch in the 90s with Drum n Bass.  It later became the beat upon which the electronic movement utilised through its inception in the 80s to Drum n Bass and now in 2014 it is one of the most iconic recognisable grooves out in the collective conscience.  From Kasem West London Drum Teacher in Harrow, London.  <a

This song has a strong funky hip-hop groove and is characterised by an open hi-hat on the first hi-hat and a bass drum between the fourth and fifth hi-hat.  The drums feature prominently in this hip-hop cover of what was more a rock song when Aerosmith released it in 1975.  Find this song in my drum lesson song page on my website.  From Kasem, Drum lessons, grades and learning in Harrow, London

This first drum kit fill, played on the snare is perfect to start using a bass, hat and snare groove.  Fills are used to add dynamics and indicates a change in the feel, or part of a composition.  They range from very easy to sometimes unimaginably difficult.  Doing fills depends on the style of music and they are best done with precision and a touch of class.  From West London Drum Tutor, Drum kit tuition in Harrow, London.  http://youtu.be/bakaHEhoPpw

The way to build up the right and left side of the drummer is very important.  It is a fallacy to say that a drummer has a strong left but a weak right hand in the same way that it is absurd to say a car manufacturer makes great cars but with weak left wheels.  I start my students with the habit of practicing and mastering single stroke, double stroke, paradiddle and buzz or multiple bounce roll with a right, then left start. This is done with a bass drum placed on the first of every eight strokes.  After this we expand and play on the toms, snare, hats and turn it all into something elegant and musical.  From West London Drum Tutor, drum kit teacher in Harrow, London  http://youtu.be/UWzTKL9HKwo

Teaching drums to adults is a mixed bag, as they have been using their body and mind in a more routine fixed way.  Children are less coordinated and capable of doing complex motor tasks, but they have greater access to the new and undiscovered.  Though adults are, contrary to popular belief, much better learners as they have more mind body connectivity and coordination.  From West London Drum Tutor, drum lessons in Harrow, London www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

Drum lessons involve precise coordination, musicality and a good measure of feel.  I frequently come across people who say without proper thought or analysis that drumming is a subordinate instrument that is nothing more and cannot stand alone as a legitimate instrument…  This line of thought is severely flawed and with an introductory drum lesson, a student gains much more than ‘hitting’ things to relieve frustration, they gain an ability to feel music, to read, to coordinate and to become a real musician. www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

The power of gravity and rebounding nature of the stick when struck over the drum is what I teach my students.  When a drummer uses excessive force to move the stick, this produces unnecessary strain and stress on the body, sticks and drums.  Drumming for me concerns directing the sticks with as little force as possible.  These are some drum lesson videos.  https://westlondon-drumtutor.com/?page_id=523

The way to bring about an excellent result regarding timing is to hang behind the beat.  First you need to feel the pulse, then think of the pulse as being just in front.  Then you need to listen without stopping.  Listening and being musically conscious is also key to playing drums with dynamism, musicality and panache. visit www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

Bass drum technique along with stick holding technique are the first and vital aspects of drumming and making real and excellent drum sounds.  I teach that having the toe on the bass pedal and not ‘stomping’ on the pedal is what one must do.  So controlling the bass drum is like standing on your toes and moving the pedal without loosing contact; much like the way a boxer moves, or a tennis player – light on the feet.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

As a drum teacher I feel that the four core rudiments are single stroke, double stroke, paradiddle, and buzz role.  I teach how to hold the sticks then apply the rudiments; but it is buzz role that consolidates the actual correct stick holding technique.  This is because it is impossible to do a buzz role until one holds the sticks correct.

Drumming is about time keeping, feel, dynamics, stick control, bass pedal control and knowledge of how to move around the kit elegantly, and or with power.  Drummers have a wide range of styles they apply and understand.  As a drummer I aspire to be able to express something special and unique; something from my creative mind and something I can call my own.  Drum teaching is about providing the materials and instructions to become a drummer, but I try to make my students into creative thinking drummers.

Drumming in a band feels like a way to express, communicate ideas and to collaborate with other people to form something that is greater than the sum of its parts.  Some people say that drumming is a great way to release your anger, to throw a tantrum…  I know that a drummer can not ever drum effectively or create if in a chaotic rage, and that drumming requires a special control that flying into a rage can not give.  Drumming is more like meditating I think.

As a drummer, the two drum stick grips have their definite contexts and place.  French grip, where the thumb is on top gives more subtlety to the playing and sounds a drummer produces, where German grip, stick held with palms placed downward, gives more power, and is generally a more dynamic impressive stick holding technique.  The U.S method aims to take the best from both worlds and is literally held with the hand at a 45 degree angle.

Bass drum technique, as with all aspects of drumming is vitally important.  Without proper bass drum control, the sound, feel, and expressive potential is greatly lessened.  The important elements of bass drum control are to
1. Keep the toes on the bass pedal around 5 C.M from the bridge of the bass pedal.
2. Move the bass drum beater elegantly with the toes remaining in contact
3. Do not stomp on the bass pedal and again keep the toes on the bass pedal

Roger Taylor, the drummer from Queen said that he never did hours of practice, he just played in the band and invented his feel, groove and fills in the studio and on tour.  Oh, so it is not everyone that plays at the level of Super Band, but there is a point here; you get amazingly excellent results from touring or playing gigs that you can not get practicing alone.  But still, I do practice alone, and with my band.  www.king-with-no-throne.com
